The Rebelution Begins

The term “Rebelution” was birthed from our new church plant, RebelChurch, which happened last night. RebelChurch is not just another ministry of Calvary Kendall, it’s not a college group, it’s not another service, it’s a movement, a revolution, a Jesus-led rebellion against the norm. RebelChurch is a place for the unchurched, for those that look at church as a “religious” establishment, somewhere they probably wouldn’t be welcomed or loved. We’re looking to love on the unloved, the hard to love. The widows, orphans, fatherless. We’re looking to do the unnatural. And I believe it when our pastor, Pastor Pedro says that at the core of any church making a difference for the kingdom of God, that church already is a rebelchurch. The church making a difference HAS to be a rebelchurch.

It was amazing leading worship for it, it was a very different experience. I led differently, I moved around more, jumped a bit, got a little crazier than usual. I even got comments afterwards, “Man you were sure gettin’ crazy up there!” “Just doing what the situation calls for!” I would reply.

But why did I get crazier? Why did I jump and move around more? Well, when taking into consideration the setting, the audience, the venue, the people, it was definitely appropriate. It was the launching of a crazy new church with a crazy vision behind it. And the vision behind the worship of RebelChurch is one that is a little edgier, high energy, and rocktastic.

The set list is also going to be completely different. It’s going to be a whole different roster of songs than Calvary Kendall. I want these songs to challenge peoples faith, encourage them to do crazy things for God. Songs that speak of reaching out to the community around us, the people right in our very city. Songs that ascribe great might and power and strength to our God. Songs that claim He’s capable of anything.

The first ever RebelChurch set list was Rise andSing (Fee), No Reason To  Hide (Hillsong), and Our God (off the new Passion album). Rise and Sing definitely ascribes greatness to God, No Reason To Hide, well, just read the title, and Our God is kind of along the same lines. There’s no reason for us to be afraid or stay on the sidelines because our God is greater and stronger.

Rise and Sing is an amazing song, but can be hard to pull off. This song is very interactive and requires response from the congregation. If you don’t think people are going to repeat after your “Whoa oh oh’s” you probably shouldn’t play it, you’ll look and feel very awkward. I will say it worked out pretty well for us. We had approximately 700 people in our audience and they were all pretty energetic and excited.

Something else that’s different is our audition process. We don’t have one. Well, not yet at least. I want the RebelChurch band to be very tight. It’s gotta rock, it’s gotta be excellent. That’s why I’m presently looking for players I don’t necessarily have to raise up or train. I’m thinking Calvary Kendall will be the place to disciple guys looking to lead or play, while RebelChurch will be for the guys ready to play, guys that can get in there and get the job done. These people might come from CCk or they might come from the outside. Last night I utilized a guitar player I just met four days ago. He obviously had references and I made sure his heart was right before putting him on the stage, but he definitely hasn’t been going to Calvary Kendall for three month (which is how long we require people to attend before getting on the CCkBand). He ended up being a huge blessing and got the job done.

And there’s a few other differences between CCk and RebelChurch, but those are the main ones. Bottom line is, RebelChurch is going to rock. I’m excited for this new venture in music and worship. I’m excited for new opportunities to do new things, try new things and play different songs. And I’ll be sure to share my experiments on here and let you know how they went. Oh and be sure to keep up with the rebel movement at http://rebelchurch.org
