Song Story: Good To Me

A few years ago, when we lived in California, I led worship at a cool little church in a cool little town called San Juan Capistrano. Skip Heitzig pastored the church most of the time I was there (which was totally rad). Up until I started attending and serving there, I was at another church leading for the youth group for about five years. That was my forte when I started out – leading high school aged kids in worship (Keep in mind, I was a kid too! I started leading when I was about fifteen). It was always just me and an acoustic guitar, for the most part.

When I started serving at the cool little church in San Juan, God kept stretching me and molding me into the worship leader He wanted me to be (I still have a very long way to go!) and cool opportunities began opening up. The biggest one was being able to lead for an adult-aged congregation, or as I like to call it, “Big Church”. On Wednesday nights, Skip started this super cool series called “The Bible From 30,000 Feet,” and after a while, they put me and my friend Levi Lusko at the helm. Levi (now a rocking pastor in Montana at Fresh Life and Skull Church) brought the word and I brought the worship. It was good times for sure.

One night in particular really impacted me. I was stoked on God. And driving home from church that night, I searched for a song to sing to Him, but couldn’t find one adequate enough for my stokeness, so I wrote one. That night, on the drive home, I just sang out what was in my heart. The most obvious feeling I had was that God was good to me, so… I sang it! And pretty soon, I had the first verse written. When I got home, I kept writing and wrote the second and third verse, and the chorus. I kept chiseling away at the melody and the lyrics the next few days. I was actually able to find the original idea I had recorded on my phone the night I wrote it. You can listen to it below, but keep in mind, this was like five years ago, which means I was five years younger, no judging!

And as I continued working on it, the song started coming together, like this. Again, no judging!

For those of you attending Calvary Kendall, who hear me sing regularly and hear Good To Me, you can see that the song has changed as well as my voice! (hopefully for the better). But Good To Me is simply a declaration and response to God’s goodness and His unfailing love. I guess if you were to categorize the verses, they would be: First verse – God’s love practically applied to our every day lives. Second verse – God’s love portrayed in His rescuing of our souls. Third verse – God’s love portrayed by coming down in human form and speaking “the words of life that set us free.” This last line of the third verse was aimed towards not only Jesus’ words spoken throughout the course of His ministry here on earth, but also His seven statements from the cross, specifically “It is finished.”

Bottom line, I’m not the song writer, God is. Whatever He puts on my heart, whatever words He brings to my lips, I write them down! And my hope and prayer is that my music will never fail to point people to Jesus Christ.

A handful of people have asked me in the past if they could have the chord chart for this song. Well, here ya go! It’ll always be here for your downloading pleasure.

UPDATE: We had the privilege of having this song professionally recorded by some great guys. It was released on an EP by the RBLBND. Listen to it on iTunes here.
