Healthy Teams

Your Worship Team Needs Health Packs

In most video games, there’s always the final boss, the final bad guy you need to kill in order to beat the game. And you usually have a health meter that goes down whenever you get hit. If it goes down far enough, you die and the bad guy wins. But then there’s health packs. Ah hah! Health packs get your health meter back up so you can finally destroy your evil adversary once and for all.

You might play video games, you might not. I personally don’t have time for them these days. But I think most people can relate to this example: Your team has a health meter. And whenever your team gets hit (which is inevitable) that meter goes down. Some leaders might think they can just keep going without tending to the health of their team, but they’re very wrong.

In order to keep your team going, to keep it healthy and strong, you gotta grab some health packs along the way. So without further adieu, here’s five things (health packs) that you can use which I believe will help maintain a healthy and strong team:

1) Stay Connected

Stay in contact with your team. If you know what’s happening in their lives, you can lead them more effectively. If they’re in the hospital, visit them. If they’re going through something, call and pray for them.

2) Get Together

If your worship ministry is anything like mine, the weekends are anything but a hang out time. There needs to be other times provided for your team to hang out and chill together. There should also be times for your team to pray together. My team has a quarterly party and monthly prayer meetings for girls and guys.

3) Write Thank-You Cards

Thank-you cards are a quick, cheap way to appreciate your team. Every few weeks, pick a few members of your team that stick out in your mind and write them a personalized note. Thank them for something specific they recently did for the ministry or church.

4) Pray

Pray for your team. And while you’re at it, make a prayer list with specific things they need prayer for. It’s such a good feeling to know you’ve been praying for them the next time you see them. And for them to know that they have a leader that prays for them is invaluable.

5) Stay In The Word

You as the leader should constantly be in the Word and you should encourage your team to do so as well. God prunes and cleanses us through His Word. He corrects us and instructs us through it. It’s such a vital part to keeping your spiritual life healthy as well as your team’s.

These are all things that I’m trying to get better at and do more often. I’ve seen the great reward that comes from using these health packs and I’ve also seen how my team’s health meter can get dangerously low if I don’t. So keep a pulse on your teams health. Remember that we’re in a battle, we need all the health packs we can get!
