New Song: How He Loves

This weekend we’re playing How He Loves for the first time at CCk. I’m extremely excited to introduce it to the church. This song has been a long time coming for me. When I first heard it, it wasn’t the greatest song in the world. I noticed its quick rise to fame among the churches as a normal part of weekly set lists. At the time, I just didn’t feel it was right for our church. I’m all about playing the newest, coolest stuff, but God taught me something recently: It’s not about playing the newest, trendiest worship song that just came out, it’s about playing what God needs, wants, knows will be most relevant for His people. If a new song just so happens to fall into that criteria, great! But we (worship leaders) aren’t to get caught up with making sure our church is playing what everyone thinks is the “coolest” worship song currently out there. If God is leading you to play How He Loves, rad; but if He’s leading you to bring back Heart Of Worship (maybe with a facelift) that’s cool too! Now, this mentality is not to encourage worship leaders to be lazy. If you’ve been playing the same ten songs over and over again and they were all written in the 90’s, get off your behind and get with the program. Sing a new song to the Lord! And also, stay relevant with the culture. The world’s changing, people are changing, the way we lead and the songs we sing should change too.
Now, back to How He Loves. This song is huge and it has a huge story behind it. Read this excerpt from the John Mark McMillan page on Wiki:
“The song has incredible sentimental meaning to McMillan considering its origins. The song was penned following the death of a dear friend who, during a church staff meeting, prayed out loud “If it would shake the youth of a nation, I will give my life today.” John McMillan was awoken in the middle of that very night by a phone call; the friend had been killed in a car crash.“
This weekend, my pastor is preaching a message entitled EPIC Love. We’re going to look at how our lives should be reflecting this most unexplainable characteristic in our heavenly Father. I’m really looking forward to focusing upon, remembering and praising God for His amazing love this weekend.
