Leadership, Greatness & the Future
This site is dedicated to my journey in learning to be a worship leader and hopefully a better leader overall. I’m very young, inexperienced, and know very little about leadership. But I believe to document the progression of learning to lead, learning to leave a legacy, investing in others and replicating yourself is something interesting and worthy to take note of. That’s why I do this blog. That’s why it’s called “Learning To Lead”. I haven’t “learned” to lead and I don’t think I’ll ever stop learning.
There’s a few things about being a leader and living life that have been on my mind lately. These are things I’ve been learning from the Bible, from books, and from other leaders and pastors in my life. I felt I should blab them here so I have record of them. Here they are:
The first is that everyone’s a leader. You’re not just a leader because someone slapped a badge on you. Everyone’s a leader to somebody. Whether it be your son or daughter, your employee or boss, your coworker or classmate, you’re influencing somebody. For some people, they know it and use it for good. Some use it for bad. Some know it and don’t care and others don’t even know it. Worship leader, you’re an influencer. Yeah, yeah, yeah, everyone knows you’re not a rockstar and you’re humble and all glory to God, that’s great. But please realize that people are looking to you as an example of how to live their life. As long as you’re a worship leader or pastor or someone everyone sees on a weekly basis, people will be watching everything you do and basing decisions off of those things, it just comes with the territory.
Next thing, your life will be as great as you allow it to be. You want to be great? Then be great. What do you think is holding you back? Your past? Your situation? Your education level? Your lack of experience? Your age? Those aren’t holding you back, those are excuses to not be great. There’s too many stories out there of how this person was sick and God used them, this person had no money but they had a vision, and that person just watched God move through their tiny, insignificant life. There’s no excuses anymore, only opportunities. No one wants to get to the end of their life and realize they were mediocre. You were an average student. You were a decent employee. You were an okay parent. Yeah right! You want to know you kicked everything in the face and did a slamming job. Be a person of integrity. Hold up your end of the bargain. Don’t make promises you can’t keep. Be on time. Live in the moment. Be committed. Be a good friend, son, daughter, parent, leader, employee, student. Invest into yourself. Invest into others. Don’t see opposition, see opportunity. Replicate yourself. Leave a legacy.
And the last thing I’ve been learning is that right now counts forever. What most people don’t realize is that many decisions they make on a daily basis, decisions that are seemingly small and insignificant, are greatly effecting their future. So the question is, what do you want your future to look like? The next question is, what does your future look like? In the future, I personally want to be a better song writer, a better husband, a better influencer, a better man of God… what am I doing now to make sure those things happen? It’s not like I’m going to turn forty and POOF, I’m a great song writer. POOF, I’m closer to God and know His Word better. Nope, doesn’t work that way. This stuff needs planning. This stuff requires discipline and diligence on our part right now. My wife, Chrissy, and I are currently re-doing our entire budget and establishing a ten year financial plan. Not to get richer. Not to be comfortable. But to provide for our children and to give lots of money away and be generous. I want us to near the end of our lives and know we did everything in our power to do that, so we’re setting ourselves up now. Because right now counts forever.
There it is. Sorry, it’s been bottling up. These aren’t things I’m telling you to do, these are things that all of us need to do better, me doubly included. Hope this spoke to you. I’ll keep you updated as I continue learning to lead.
